Today I was an invited keynote speaker (https://nyitspeedtech.wordpress.com/presenters/) at the SpeedTech Conference hosted by the New York Institute of Technology. With finals and graduation here in Huntington, WV, I was unable to attend in person. Instead I presented via Zoom from my office at Marshall.

My topic was on Using Facebook Groups to Promote Student Engagement and I talked about the experiences I have had with my Psychology of Social Media students continuing to engage in the course Facebook group even years after their course ended. Unlike a traditional Learning Management System (LMS) like BlackBoard or Canvas, which are unavailable to students when their course ends, Facebook groups can be available for as long as the students want to engage in the community.

I earned my Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology from Michigan State University, and I’m currently an Assistant Professor of Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundations at Marshall University. My research interests include ways K–12 science teachers learn science from their own teaching practice and the impacts of educating college students on the psychology of social media.
